Beadle's not about any more

I was just flicking around the internet when this piece of news caught my eye on msn.

The showbiz world mourns TV presenter Jeremy Beadle who has died after battling pneumonia. He was one of ITV's biggest stars in the 1980s.

TV star Jeremy Beadle has died at the age of 59. He was in intensive care battling pneumonia when he lost his fight for life. The star leaves his wife, daughters Cassie and Bonnie, and step children Leo and Claire.
In a statement, his agent Nick Canham of MPC entertainment, said: "Our heartfelt condolences go to his wife Sue, his two daughters, Cassie and Bonnie and his stepchildren Leo and Claire. He will be greatly missed."

What a shame. He may have irritated a lot of people on the shows he presented, but I believe he was a very nice person.

R.I.P. Jeremy.

What no goals?

Everton 0 Spurs 0

It's been 64 games since Spurs have been involved in a goalless draw so I suppose it had to come sometime. To be fair, it's a good point earned as Everton have been consistently good at home this season. However, it sounded like a dreary game with not too many chances created.

Another different line-up in defence for Spurs this evening. Brand new signing Jonathan Woodgate made his debut, Chris Gunter who was bought from Cardiff a couple of weeks ago, Chimbonda back from suspension and Huddlestone still covering centre back. I wonder what combination we'll see on Saturday?

West Ham beat Liverpool with a penalty in the dying seconds and so unfortunately the gap between us and them has widened to eight points, and they have a game in hand. Hmmm....Spurs desperately need a decent winning run now.

PS. Happy birthday Mr. Berbatov!

FA Cup heartbreak

Manure 3 Spurs 1 (FA Cup 4th Round)

Following the elation of Tuesday, it would have been total dreamland if Spurs had managed to overturn United on their own turf but it wasn't to be. I did in fact predict it exactly right with Keano scoring first and United winning 3-1 (unfortunately). However, that old cliche 'if only' came back to haunt us today as Spurs had some really great chances to win the game. Two of them fell to Jenas, the second of which he found himself one on one with the goalkeeper but it was a poor effort that went well wide. Berbatov came close too, just a yard from the goal, although the defender may have got more of a foot on the ball. The lads applied themselves well especially with an even more makeshift defence: Lee, Dawson, Huddlestone and O'Hara.

At the break it was perfectly balanced at 1-1 but the second half fell apart when Dawson was red carded for handball in the box when it looked as though Rooney was about to score. A moment of madness because Ronaldo never misses penalties so he may as well have let Rooney score and we would've still had 11 players on the pitch. However, you don't have time to think and that was just his reaction. Another suspension and one less defender. Who'll be next to slot in at the back? Berbatov?

Spurs conceded the third goal with another goalkeeping error with Cerny letting the ball go under his body. A real shame because since keeping Robbo out of the team, he's done really well. I get the feeling Ramos will be looking seriously for another goalkeeper in the summer.

As soon as the match ended, I started to watch back the Arsenal game to cheer myself up. Always a good game to have to hand at times like this!

Friends and food

I had a lovely Saturday. Firstly I met an old pal Sue for lunch in town. I used to work with her 7-8 years ago - my the years have flown; I couldn't actually believe it was that long. Anyway, since she left HSBC, we've kept in touch mainly via birthday cards, Christmas cards and the occasional phone call. We met up outside the Odeon and then decided to eat at the Slug and Lettuce. It was pretty packed and I've got to say I wasn't impressed with the service at all. We'd been siting there for 10-15 minutes before a waiter came over and even then he took orders from two tables in our vicinity before ours. I detest lack of attentiveness in restaurants. We both had penne pasta with a creamy pepper sauce but it really lacked any seasoning; I had to pile on the salt and pepper for it to taste of anything. After I'd ordered a cup of tea to finish, we sat chatting for ages about anything and everything and it was so nice to catch up. Sue is such a nutter; I think that's why we get on so well! :) Back to the service, no-one bothered coming over for about an hour after that to ask if we wanted anything else and we struggled to get the waiter's attention in order to receive the bill. I will not be recommending it.

In the evening John and I went round to Sunita's house, who is my old school friend. She is married to Praful and they have two girls Gauri and Khushi. Other good friend Suk and her hubby Leigh also went. As soon as we arrived we were faced with Sunita's brother who was wearing a Gooner shirt - shame about that and of course he didn't get any ribbing from me *cough* 5-1 *cough* lol. Leigh is a Chelscum fan and Praful of the Manure kind so of course there was a bit of banter. We don't hate each other really!

We were treated to traditional Indian food prepared by Sunita's mum who also lives with them. She had strict orders not to make it too hot (this time) and it was yummy! Ellie and Simon said they weren't coming at the last minute and there was so much left over, so everyone went home with doggy bags. Gawd, the fridge stunk when I opened it this morning!

Heath; the tragedy

Australian actor Heath Ledger, aged just 28, was found dead in his New York apartment two days ago naked and face down on his bed, surrounded by pills.

It's such a waste of life and talent. The media is currently reporting that his death was accidental, and the drugs were prescribed. Heath was said to have been having trouble sleeping during the filming of the new Batman movie 'The Dark Knight'. It has since emerged that the housekeeper who found Ledger's unconscious body reportedly made two calls to close friend Mary-Kate Olsen before calling 911, and it's possible he may still have been alive when she initially arrived. I can't bear to think this was the case because it makes his death even more pointless. The latest news following the autopsy, is that his death is inconclusive.

Heath was heartbroken by his split with co-star Michelle Williams last year and leaves behind a two year old daughter Matilda Rose.

When I heard the news on GMTV, I was stunned and found myself rooted to the spot, hand over my mouth with tears in my eyes. I couldn't believe it. A few years ago, I had a massive crush on the guy, despite the age gap but then you can't control who you're attracted to can you? I first noticed him in the teen film '10 things I hate about you'. I can still remember the reaction I had when he appeared in his first scene and it was like 'Hello, who's this?' At the time, his hair was long and curly, which always turns my head (see pic below).

I admired his acting too. He wasn't interested in making any more teen type movies; he had much more ambition. Like another much loved actor of mine, Johnny Depp, Heath was choosy about which film roles he took on, although he didn't get it right a few times. Other than '10 Things', my favourites were 'The Patriot', A Knight's Tale' and 'Brokeback Mountain'. In the latter, he was nominated for best actor in a drama in the Golden Globes and also best actor at the Academy awards.

Comparisons to other young actors who left this world before their time will no doubt be made, particularly River Phoenix who died at the hands of drugs, although in totally different circumstances.

To me, Heath was quite a reserved person, and certainly didn't relish attention. His passing is such a tragedy and he will be greatly missed. My heart goes out to his family and friends.

Spurs are on their way to Wembley!

Spurs 5 Gooners 1

WEMB-ER-LEY! WEMB-ER-LEY!

The atmosphere at the Lane was absolutely amazing - I've experienced nothing like it before, this being my first North London derby ever.
The chanting, singing and clapping was non stop for 90 minutes. I'm so glad I persuaded my other half to go to a mid-week game despite him having to get up at 5:30 in the morning. It was so worth the £61 per ticket to be there and witness what was a massacre on the pitch and I have to say this was one of the most enjoyable nights of my entire life.

Scorers: Jenas, Bendtner og, Keane, Lennon, Malbranque

Every Spurs player gave 100% effort tonight. With this kind of determination and work rate, we could beat anyone. I just hope this isn't a one-off. They need to give this display every game and if they do, we will be back up there with the big boys.

Going into the game, I admit I had my reservations; last year's semi-final was still at the forefront of my mind and I could see the same happening again. However, how wrong I was!
I couldn't have imagined a 5-1 scoreline in my wildest dreams. To beat Arsenal 1-0 would have been fantastic; this was just pure ecstasy. Spurs could've scored even more as Berbatov had a fantastic chance in the first half, one on one with the goalkeeper and somehow managed to hit the post. In the second half, Defoe had time to control the ball and then shoot but chose to hit it first time, and it was a foot wide of the post.

Throughout the game, Spurs dominated, passed the ball around beautifully, made great runs and the defense was superb. Ledley really makes a huge difference. The only slightly tentative part of the game was when Spurs were 4-0 up and Ramos substituted both Berbatov and Keane for Defoe and Boateng. Personally, I would've left Keane on. A few minutes later Arsenal brought on Adebayor and Eduardo and this was the only time in the game when we felt some pressure. When the Goons scored, nervous tension set in despite still being three goals ahead. We just been hurt so many times before. However, their moment was short lived and the game was finished off nicely with a late goal from Malbranque.

Whatever Mr. Ramos and co have done in training has clearly paid off and although I'll never forget what Martin Jol did for the club, we now have to look firmly forward and with even greater ambition.

Apart from the odd concert or two, I doubt I have ever jumped up and down so much in my entire life! My feet were killing me after the game as everyone was standing instead of sitting; the stewards didn't bother on this occasion to sit people down. John ended up standing on the seat. Fortunately we were right at the back of East Upper so no-one was behind us. After the final whistle it was manic. The players gathered in the centre circle in a group hug and jumped up and down too. No-one wanted to leave. However, when we did exit the stadium it was like a street party was taking place in the rain. The fans were on such a high.

I have to tell you about something John said as we walked away from the Lane because he had me creasing up. "So what round of the cup was that then" he asked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I said " ARE YOU SERIOUS?, why do you think we were all singing about Wembley? Bless. He's just a bit slow. I'll be so gutted if I don't manage to get a ticket for the final. As a Lillywhite member, I won't get priority and they have only allocated 31,204.

I think I will just end this blog with a sing song. All together now......

"Que Sera Sera
Whatever will be will be
We're going to Wemb-er-ley

Que Sera Sera"

"Spurs are on their way to Wembley
Tottenham's gonna do it again
They can't stop us
The boys from Tottenham
The boys from White Hart Lane"....

Sad news

I learned a few days ago that my brother David has split up with his long-term partner Tina. I was at my Mum's at lunchtime when he called. It was all over on Boxing day apparently and that now figures because Dave came round with the kids on his own. He's been in a bad way - drinking and not eating. They are still living under the same roof at the moment, although Tina has been staying with her Mum on and off. David keeps threatening to just move into a cheap dive somewhere in Southend for the sake of getting out but Mum obviously doesn't want that and offered to have him live back at theirs to perhaps save some money so he can put down a deposit on a flat. What a mess, although it could be worse if they had been married. It's a real shame especially when there's three children involved. Ebony is 11 and from Tina's previous relationship so she's already had enough upheaval in her life. Kasey is six and Ronnie is two.

I hope things aren't going to get awkward between them and that the split stays amicable for the sake of the children. It seems Tina has already been a bit vindictive as Mum was due to look after Ronnie last Thursday but she went over Dave's head and rearranged for her mum to babysit instead. I do hope she doesn't make it difficult for all of us to see the kids because we haven't done anything wrong.

I don't know what's going to happen now but at least Dave has been over to Mum and Dad's for a chat and a good feed. He is still trying to cope with his twelve hour shift work, four days off, four days on with nights every other shift. He told Mum that he hadn't slept for 25 hours and was still working at machinery, then driving home from London he felt he was falling asleep at the wheel.
I know it sounds harsh but he has to get his act together - he won't do any favours for himself if he drinks heavily, he has to eat and sleep. If necessary, get signed off by the doctor.

So sad...

Keano, there's only one Keano!

Spurs 2 Sunderland 0

Team: Cerny, Lee, Dawson, Huddlestone, Stalteri (Chimbonda), Lennon, Boateng, Jenas, O'Hara (Tainio), Berbatov, Defoe (Keane)

John and I were back at the Lane for his one, thinking of a possible 5-0 thrashing and getting revenge for that defeat on the first day of the season, losing 1-0 in the final minute.

I felt really gloomy on the drive up there; it was a miserable day and pouring with rain. However, once we'd met up with Debs, Mick and Craig in the pub, my mood lifted and I was fine.

Ramos was clearly thinking about the Carling Cup 2nd leg on Tuesday night, and so the team was slightly strange looking - particularly Huddlestone covering the centre back position.

The match got off to a great start. On Spurs' first attack after two minutes, thanks to the determination of Jamie O'Hara, Aaron Lennon finished off the move by poking the ball home using the underside of his boot. Here we go I thought, a 5-0 is coming! The first half was full of chances mainly falling to Berbatov and Defoe. The closest they came was when JJ had the ball on the corner of the box and whether it was an attempted shot or a pass (I couldn't tell), it ended up a toe poke away from Berba's boot at the far post. Lennon continued to make a nuisance of himself and was one of the few that looked on form.

The second half was pretty dire. There was no movement, no enthusiasm and the players looked tired again. Sunderland had us pinned back in our own half for a lot of the time; they pressed and pressed for a goal but it just wouldn't come. I don't know how. If I'm being truthful, they could have won it because they were the better side this half. Usually Spurs would have caved in and conceded, especially as Sunderland had several corners and free kicks. However, Dawson today was back to his best. He seemed to block every ball and made clearances with his head all afternoon. Cerny also had a good game. He made a wonderful save from close range after he parried the first shot, and if he carried on like that, Robbo won't get his place back. On the negative, Stalteri was awful and when Chimbonda came on as his replacement, he was even worse! He looked sluggish and all over the place. All I can say is if Spurs play like this on Tuesday, they'll be severely punished.

Somehow Spurs managed to hold on to the 1-0 lead right up to the end. Then in injury time, my prayers were answered when Keano took a shot from the edge of the area. It didn't have much power but fortunately the Sunderland goalkeeper allowed the ball to go under his body and in.
This was Keano's 100th Spurs goal and the fans were treated to his old goal celebration: the cartwheel, the roly-poly and the hand gesture. Great stuff! The fans sang 'There's only one Keano' for which seemed like ages - the atmosphere was fantastic. Just a bit of a shame that his milestone goal wasn't a more sensational one. Oh well, they all count and it was a complete relief that it was now game over and three points in the bag. Even after the final whistle, fans waited and applauded him again and he gestured back.

Short n sweet...

Reading 0 Spurs 1 (FA Cup 3rd Round replay)

Four changes to the side: debut for Chris Gunter replacing Lee, Defoe in for Berba who has man-flu, Tainio in for Lennon and Kaboul replaces King.

Congrats to Robbo and his wife who had a baby boy yesterday. Awww!

Listened to the match on the radio. A few chances in the first half but sounded a scrappy game in the second. However, Spurs always had the edge. Keano on 15 minutes (his 99th goal for Spurs) sealed our place in the 4th round away to Man Utd. Can't wait to lose that one!

New Year's resolution: must be more positive when playing big four away from home despite not winning for 14 years.

Question to self: why?

What happened?

Chel$ki 2 Spurs 0

I watched this one on the internet but unfortunately it was a pretty uninteresting game.

A very disappointing performance today; Spurs looked a totally different side who should've beaten the Gooners in midweek. The only change was Boateng in the starting eleven as Jenas was suspended. Lennon was the only one who looked dangerous - no-one else stood out whatsoever; even the subs had no impact at all. Chelsea's defence was like trying to get through a brick wall and so hardly any chances were created. Berba's free kick on the edge of the box was the closest we came.

I hate to say it but Chel$ki were the better side today. I felt so optimistic coming into this game and now I feel deflated. However, I will be at the return tie at the Lane next month and hopefully it will be a repeat of 5th November 2006.

It's all in the balance

Gooners 1 Spurs 1 (Carling Cup Semi Final 1st leg)

Team: Cerny, Chimbo, Daws, Ledley, Lee, Steed (KPB), Lennon, O'Hara, JJ, Berba, Keano (JD)

Once again we should have beaten the Scum (who don't even deserve a capital letter!). Spurs had most of the possession and barring perhaps the first 20-25 minutes where they couldn't keep possession, dominated the game.

This was our best pressure in the game - five chances in as many minutes:

32nd minute - Steed misses virtually an open goal after Keano tackled and ball fell loose
33rd minute - Steed heads wide
34th minute - Berba put Steed through on goal but too close to goalie
35th minute - Berba has good shot saved from approx 20 yards
36 minutes - JJ scores from Keano pass across the box

Just before the break, Berba had another chance. Would have been great to go at half time two goals to the good.

In the second half, Spurs applied good early pressure and in the 53rd minute, Keano ran with the ball, took it a tad wide and missed.

With just ten minutes left, the almost inevitable thing happened - the Arse equalised. But not without extreme luck. Lee got his tackle in on Wallcott but it rebounded off his arm and flew in the goal. Bugger! So close again.

JD had a brilliant chance of winning the game for us just a couple minutes after he came on but the ball was skied badly. Can't complain really - I said before the game that if we can at least get a draw, we have a great chance when playing the second leg at the Lane.

I have to say the match was very entertaining, it was refereed well (how often can you say that?), the game was played fairly with no bad tackles and no bookings. Spurs play at times was a pleasure to watch, especially Berbatov who is back at his best with superb touches and passes - oh such beautiful football, that's what it's all about. I can't imagine the team without him. The defense was far stronger with Ledley back again; he seems to have a big influence on the other players and hope to God he stays fit. I thought Y P Lee had a strong game too. O'Hara is a young confident player with grit and determination - that's good to see. Lennon also very lively and covered well defensively. I have no idea how JJ got MOTM - he didn't play badly but he is never dominant in the midfield. Just because he scored the goal doesn't mean he was the best player on the pitch. I not being biased but Berba was easily the stand out player.

Just one final thing. I love Ray Wilkins! I hope he commentates more often because he was very complimentary about the players and the way they were applying themselves. When the other commentator mentioned those dreaded words 'body language' whilst referring to Berbatov, I just huffed loudly and shouted at the TV. They are like a cracked record. He is playing fantastic at the moment but still doesn't cut a break - however, Ray didn't take the bait and said he thought he was a brilliant player (or something to that effect).

I went straight online to book tickets for the second leg in two weeks time. Can't wait - I just hope we can make it to the final this time.

- Would you ever date your first love again?

Not a chance - although I doubt it was 'love' anyway. I was naive and he was a scumback and a user.

- Do you have a girlfriend/boyfriend?

Yes

- Current mood?

Ok, but getting tired and have a numb bum from sitting doing this questionnaire!

Cup stalemate

Spurs 2 Reading 2 (FA Cup 3rd Round)

That old chestnut 'if only' reared its ugly head again.

A perfect pass from Berbatov across the penalty area and Keano fluffed it with his left foot. Seems that's becoming a habit of late. Reading took the lead when the referee's assistant adjudged that the ball had crossed the line from a Hunt free kick. Robbo caught the ball rather than tipping it over the bar and in doing so, the momentum carried him backwards into the goal. However, with outstretched arms, it appeared that he'd prevented it crossing the line. Neither camera angle managed to confirm it.

Spurs managed an equaliser when Lennon passed to Berbatov who was unmarked in the box and he smashed it home. Things improved when a long pass from Dawson found Keane in the penalty area and his legs were taken from under him by the defender. A definite penalty. Berba stepped up this time as Robbie had missed his last two. I'm guessing that may have been the manager's decision not Robbie's as he doesn't strike me as a person who would shy out of taking one at any cost.
Berba scored from the spot with ease to make it 2-1 making his goal tally against Reading 6 in 7 days. He should have had his second hatrick in a week when a great cross from Lennon found him three yards from the goal but agonisingly he trod on the ball at the crucial moment. I could have cried. If it had been 3-1 I'm sure it would have been game over. However, Spurs let Reading back in when Robbo's parried save only went as far as Hunt who scored the equaliser. Things went slightly sour for Spurs when Huddlestone, who had only been on the pitch a couple of minutes, stupidly retaliated and was seen to knock his head onto his opponent's right in front of the referee's assistant. Another match ban to be served!

To make matters worse, if Spurs manage to beat Reading away in the replay, they'll have to face Manchester United at Old Trafford. Could that draw have been any worse? :-(

Two out of three ain't bad

Spurs' Christmas round-up.

Spurs 5 Fulham 1 (Boxing Day)

Had guests for the day so only caught up with this game on teletext and highlights on Match of the Day. Didn't look a very exciting game but what the heck when we score five goals courtesy of two from Keane, two from Huddlestone and one from Defoe. The good news was that club captain Ledley King made his long-awaited return from injury and played out the 90 minutes.

Spurs 6 Reading 4 (29 Dec)

I was at the Lane for this one and what a thriller it turned out to be. I think you can safely say we got our money's worth! However, if I don't get a pacemaker fitted soon, I fear the worst because the emotional rollercoaster that the Spurs put you through is hard to take. Spurs have the highest aggregate of goals scored per game in the entire Premiership, followed by Reading so it was hardly going to be 0-0.

At 1-0 up after 7 minutes courtesy of Berbatov, it looked as if Spurs were going to cruise it. Hehe, how wrong you can be! Defensively, our lads were all over the place again and the equaliser hardly surprisingly came from a set piece. Robbo came to punch but didn't get enough on the ball; it landed at the feet of Cisse and Robbo couldn't recover. Keane should've put Spurs in the lead just before half time when he missed Berba's cross by centimetres. That's the way it stayed until half time and the game was not exactly a spectacle at that point.

The second half was probably the best you'll see all season from an entertainment point of view. No doubt Ramos et al won't see it that way as conceding that many goals at home is not good.
After both teams had a chance, Reading took the lead from a corner when again no-one managed to defend the header. Spurs then had a very bad spell and looked all over the place - a complete mess in fact. If Reading had taken one of their chances, it may have been game over but against the run of play, Berbatov got got his second, blasting it into the net from a lucky rebound. Game on. This is when it started to look like a game of ping-pong - every time there was an attack, it seemed to end up with a goal. 3-2 Reading, 3-3 Berbatov hatrick - his first for the club. This was a cheeky goal, letting the ball fall to his feel before swivelling and almost 'passing' the ball into the net. 4-3 Reading, 4-4 Malbranque, 5-4 Spurs - Keano missed another penalty but Defoe headed in the rebound. However, he clearly encroached into the area and the penalty should have been retaken. The referee missed it - never mind eh?! Finally, 6-4 to Spurs and Berba gets his fourth with another walloping shot! Hooray!
By this time, my heart was racing, my head was spinning and I felt completely drained, partly because of my cold. I don't think anybody could believe what they were seeing. England won't need it for a while so I really think we should adopt the 'Great Escape' theme tune.

Aston Villa 2 Spurs 1 (1 Jan)

This one was live on Sky. King was rested and Chimbonda was out which meant Zokora covering at right back. A drab game, nothing much to report really. No Spurs player stood out as having a great game. Keano was dropped in favour of Defoe, who did absolutely nothing all match except when he popped up to score an amazing equaliser. Spurs let themselves down yet again by poor defending from set pieces (jeez, I'm sounding like a cracked record) but whoever the manager is, it doesn't seem to make an iota of difference because the players just can't get to grip with marking and jumping to defend headers. Every time there's a corner or free kick, you can almost put money on the fact that Spurs will concede a goal. However, I think our lads at least deserved one point. :(
